Skateboarding is one of the most popular sports hobbies among young people today. According to market research, there are approximately 12 million skateboarders in the U.S. alone. For the majority of skateboarders, their extreme sport is just a hobby. For a small handful of skateboarders, it is their profession. This is all done by sponsorships, contests, product endorsements, and demos. Some professional skateboarders make quite a good living.
All skaters start out just doing it for a hobby or fun. It takes every professional skateboarder years to be able to skate the way they do. Just like anything, skateboarding takes a great deal of practice to master. Every professional skateboarder has skated for at least 6 to 8 years, and some have skated for over 10 to 12 years before they became pro. Do you have the dedication to turn this into one of your hobbies that make money?
To become a professional skateboarder, you have to do more than just skateboard. You have to be able to get your name out there, and let people notice you. In some cases you have to know the right people to get your name in the skateboard scene. Entering contests is a great way that skateboarders get noticed by sponsors. Some skateboarders make a sponsor me video, and send it to all of the skateboard companies. If any of the companies like what they see, they will sponsor that skater. They give free products, pay for contest fees, and give free travel for tours.
Skateboarders also get paid to skate in demos. Many fans and young people like to come and watch the pros skate. These shows called “demos,” charge fees, and people will pay to watch their favorite pros skate. Professional skateboarders go on tours for their sponsors around the country, and sometimes over seas, to skate in demos, and attend autograph signings. They get paid for all of these events.
Skateboarders also make money by winning contests. Some contests are small, and the winnings can be anywhere from 1000 dollars, to 5,000 dollars. But for some of the big name contest such as the X Games, and the Dew Tour, the winnings can be over 50,000 dollars. This is where skateboarders make big money. They have to be up to their best to beat everyone else, and win. All of these contests are for sponsored skaters and pros only. This is what your goal is if you are wanting to turn something you love to do into one of your hobbies that make money.
Pro skaters make money from product endorsements as well. A lot of skaters are featured in commercials, and magazine ads. Their sponsors pay them to help them advertise their product. It makes a good name for that company if fans see their sponsored skater in videos and magazines wearing their product. Most kids will want to take after their favorite pro skater, and buy their shoes, decks, and other products.
It’s best to start at your own pace, and not skate just for the money and fame. Skateboarding is not just a sport, it is an art form. It’s not something you can just decide to start doing one day and become good at. It definitely takes a great deal of blood, sweat, and tears to be mastered.
