Hobbies That Make Money – Woodworking

by Robert Dant

Many have felt the hardship of today’s struggling economy and are seeking creative ways to supplement their income. Some people are turning to their hobbies for that added boost into the family pocket. Hobbies that were once nothing more than relaxing pastimes are being incorporated into the daily grind. Unable to purchase furniture or gifts for the holidays many people are turning to their own creative ideas to satisfy the family’s needs.

Another important thing to remember if you wish to start working with wood is that it takes a lot of time, energy and dedication. Math skills will also be needed to make sure all your cuts and measurements are correct. Nothing will put a damper on your pride more than creating a coffee table or chair that wobbles. As the age old adage goes, “Measure twice, cut once.”

Woodworking can be done by all with the proper tools and training. Using a wide variety of materials you can create works of art, elegant or practical furniture and gifts or crafts. Initially you will have to make a considerable investment to purchase the equipment and materials you’ll need but in the long run it will pay for itself.

Not only can you create items that can be sold to the public for a profit but you can also do home repairs that could save you thousands of dollars. Do-it-yourself home repair cuts out the contractor who is also trying to make a living and would undoubtedly have charged you a hefty sum. Also, the pride that goes with fixing and repairing your own home is priceless.

Trying to earn an extra income can be problematic to say the least. Success doesn’t come to all. If you’ve had years of practice and already have the reputation that is required for selling products then you’ve already succeeded. For beginners it’s always recommended to start small creating such things as toys and jewelry boxes just to name a few. Building on these skills you can then move up to bigger pieces like chairs, coffee tables and simple cabinets.

Selling your pieces locally can be just the thing to supplement your income. If you have bigger ambitions then you’ll want to expand. Once you have collected the skills and your pieces are what people are looking for then you’ll want to advertise locally or by creating a website. This will get your art, crafts or furniture to a larger audience.

Marketing can be done in many ways for a little investment. The simplest would be by creating brochures on a computer with pictures of selected items and placing these brochures on any and every bulletin board you can find. Placing your advertisements in grocery stores, restaurants or even apartment complex laundromats could generate local traffic and sales.

Once you have established yourself with your own pieces you may want to consider taking on orders. By doing this you will increase the word-of-mouth advertising when a customer is satisfied with their purchase. Make sure that quality comes first with your products so that you can have repeat business in hopefully one of your many hobbies that make money.
